Lakenheath Open House August 28th 1988
A dire day with barely any flying at all. The 48th put up a four ship but we only heard the flyby as they were above a very low cloud base. Here's the ground display.

Notice anything unusual about the SR-71's nose-cone. I did and I asked the crewmembers where and when it had been airtested. The answer was slightly vague; I think they were caught offguard by my observation. In the years since, there has been speculation the factory article 17955 has visited this country, and was it this masquerading as 17980. I don't think the Paul Crickmore books are positive on this: I'll go back home and have another read.
Roger.

Re: Lakenheath Open House August 28th 1988
Great post - always loved seeing the 48th F-111s at these shows
Can remember it being a big deal with the first visit of the B-1B to the UK. Can remember base personnel lining up on the grass next to the runway when it departed and the pictures in the magazines of the time.
Thanks for taking the time to post
Darren

That's observant Roger. Looks like the ASARS-1 nose which PC first revealed was tested on European deployment at Mildenhall in '83. He does however state that 955 was marked up as 962 for that deployment and the rest of the fleet would be upgraded to operate with the new system.H.A.Bucken wrote:Notice anything unusual about the SR-71's nose-cone. It was also the day of the Ramstein Open Day disaster when the Frecce Tricolori singleton collided with main formation.

Thanks for sharing your photos. I always remember going to a show at Lakenheath because Mildenhall's runway was being resurfaced that year so they couldn't have the Air Fete - is that true or just something my granddad misheard? Like some of you, I overlooked the SR's nose until it was mentioned.
Re: Lakenheath Open House August 28th 1988
Pretty sure the Air Fete was held in 1988 - dont have access to my photo stash at the moment or Scramble for their list but from memory - sure others will be able to confirmpage_verify wrote:Thanks for sharing your photos. Could do 88 show but have a log for arrivals and departures Fri/Mon so definitely went ahead in 88.

Ah my apologies - was there a year in the mid-80s when there wasn't an Air Fete?

Great set of aircraft - miss the F-111's size and power. Amazing to think that nearly 30 years have passed, and that Red Arrows shot (and the Danish F-16) could have been taken yesterday (other than a different tail fin scheme)

1999 was the year of no show due to Kosovo.
Re: Lakenheath Open House August 28th 1988
No, complete run in the '80s. The SR-71Det and also the 513ACCW and I believe the NAF were boltholed to LN due to runway works at Mildenhall.page_verify wrote:Ah my apologies - was there a year in the mid-80s when there wasn't an Air Fete?
Yep, the 'vark was fabulous bit of kit and though we've come to love the Eagles they'll never be '111s!! Time flies eh?!downes0106 wrote:Great set of aircraft - miss the F-111's size and power. Yes, a very dark day for airshows. I went to this show on the Saturday which had slightly better weather and then Leicester on the Sunday - the F-104 was shared but the WGN Tornado didn't show - I wonder if word had come through by then and all German (and USAFE) display flying had stopped.XR713 wrote:It was also the day of the Ramstein Open Day disaster when the Frecce Tricolori singleton collided with main formation.
Great set from much missed days..

hi
I am in the picture of the BDRF phantom I am the bloke in front of the chap with the blue anorak, if you look at the picture you can see a bloke at the tail pushing up the tail hook as someone had pulled the lever in the cockpit and it slammed down, 10 minutes later there was metal barriers around the tail end. 2 minutes before I was stood underneath the tail!!!. can I have a copy of this please will pay p & p etc.

Great Photo's. Brings back memories of seeing the F111's out and about in the 80's. The BT F15C (84-0009) became part of the 493rd's fleet.
Re: Lakenheath Open House August 28th 1988
'Air Fete '88' was a legendary one, as I resembled a cooked Lobster afterwards, and got 4/5ths of 5/8ths of eff all sympathy from SWMBO
We were also at the LN 'open house', and the weather WAS dire
Great shots, anyways
Thanks
