Nellis 1988

Post by dollar99 » Tue Jun 27, 2017 3:04 pm

Had a major PC crash the other weekend, all the pictures were safe but has taken a while to get sorted and back to normal!

West Coast 1988, we tried to time a visit to Nellis to get some Red Flag participants and hopefully the 18th TFW coming off William Tell. These were the days you could stay in the desert off the end of the runways.

Nice set of photos loved the 111's and of course the Rhino's. that Euro camo'ed F16 looked weird (in a nice way).

Very enjoyable- thanks for posting. The variety of markings on the RAF jets is a reminder of the good old days, and that camo F-16 looks great.

Great stuff.

One the Tornados has the serial on the tailplane - not seen that before.

Thanks for posting,

Ah, I remember that.... Variety and colour! It was a long while ago, though! ;)

Up until the mid '80s all fixed wing RAF types had Underwing serials facing different ways so as they could be read (usually by the Observer Corps or low level Police!) as they came toward and away from you. This was also introduced by the Indian Air Force and a few others. With all the stores and moving bits on Tonka wings the serials were placed on the tailplanes. From ' 83 ish the serials were reduced to one wing/tailplane and then removed completely- spotting back then was much easier!
