Oops

Sorry I thought it was a kind of requiem - a very nice one at that.

(My shots don't come out on a cloudy day let alone at night!)

Mike.

Evening folks

Did Phil ever get to see the Canberra storage area/MU at Wroughton before it became a RNAY for helicopters? Or for that matter did anyone on here visit it in the good old days?

Yes I did. October and November 1971 they were turfing Canberras out of storage at a fair old rate and chopping them up for scrap. Including WN467 the prototype T.4.

Hello Phil

Fingers and so on crossed, I only ever got the Lightning outside Coningsby and the Phantoms dumped at Wattisham during the July 1992 photocall. Oh and the Hunter and JP that were at Halton about the same time, but not much if anything else.

Hello, boys, I'm b-a-a-a-c-k!!

After a bit of pestering and cajoling from His Nibs, here are some more aircraft in various states of repair.

2 August 1974

Vampire T.1 7203M / TG349 at Baldock

23 July 1975

Some properly broken aircraft, including a Hunter of sorts (possibly at Predannack?)

22 July 1975

RAF Locking

7118M / LA198/JX-C - Spitfire F.21

7920M / WL360 - Meteor T.7

Canberras and a couple of 'Whistling T*ts' at RAF Halton

7387M / WD999 - Canberra B.2

8492M / WJ872 - Canberra T.4

It's also a little-known fact that the RAF conducted a series of trials with the aim of creating man-eating aircraft in the 1960s...

8204M / XM271 - Canberra B(I).8

8221M / XP409 - Argosy C.1

As ever, more info about the airframes can be found on Phil's Flickr pages.

Great set of images of some very sad a/c. Only wish he'd got a close- up of those Sqn. badges on the nose of the Last NEAF Strike Canberra! Recognise those of 6 + 32 Sqns. but not t'other two.

I love these. It's upsetting to see them in such a sad state but I often wish that I had been older when we had an effective air force in the 50's and 60's. So many bases I could have visited and I would suspect that military aircraft would have been flying every day. I even missed out on seeing my local airfield at Syerston when 2FTS were flying Jet Provosts (although we did sometimes see them over Nottingham). Oh for a time machine and to be able to have a modern digital camera to record everything. Please keep posting these historical images.
