Spadeadam 19/04/17 USMC KC130J 810 & RNLAF C130H G-275

Post by catkins » Fri Apr 21, 2017 6:12 am

I'm having Lockheed C-130 Hercules variety on my visits to Spadeadam recently ... last week RAF C-130J, this week USMC KC-130J 165810 Bronco65 and RNlAF C-130H 30 G-275 NAF75.
Initial attempts at longer range shots were a waste of time with very hazy conditions but high cloud did give slightly better light for closer shots ... still not ideal though.
Luckily both the USMC Herc and Dutch Herc made some great low passes. And it was only in the edits that I realised that a Dutch pilot/co-pilot was continually waving as they made a nice curving pass by - cheers!

Great stuff

I wondered where Bronco 65 had been when it returned to Mildenhall on Thursday.

As shown in the 6th photo, it's a missile that gives the visual plume of a manpad missile being fired at an aircraft. It is sometimes also used along with Malina, a tripod mounted box which emits a bright light that emits a UV/IR radiation that is then 'seen' by the aircraft's onboard threat detection system. As a result, the aircraft may fire chaff or flares (only helicopters nowadays at Spadeadam) to counter such threats, or they may just check and train with their onboard equipment to respond to the threat by evasive flying.

Thanks, I don't think that the weather did any favours but at least I had something close too to photograph. The USMC & RNLAF Hercules were back again today I'm told.

Nice catches Chris. Wish I'd gone down to Spade, rather than spend 2 blanks in the S-M

Well I think that there seems to be just as much luck or lack of at Spadeadam at times! Sometimes see Hercs flying low over Kielder Reservoir but to sit there would need such luck, and the UK Hercs seemed to use the Solway at very low level quite a bit possibly because of the wind turbines, and I feel tempted to try out a gamble there too but....
Hope something comes your way soon, but I think that we need closer links to the pilot's flight planning hotline!!
Cheers, Chris
