Re: Tiger meet 2018- Poland
Well I overheard one guy say he wasn't interested in going next year as Posnan will be just wall to wall F-16s. :-)

When was the last time a Tiger meet was held in the UK?

Re: Tiger meet 2018- Poland
Good question, I believe it may have been at Fairford RIAT when they incorporated it as a theme, cannot recall the year though. Well overdue .
Re: Tiger meet 2018- Poland
With 33 Sqn and 814 NAS our only Tiger units I dont think it will happen over here, I cant imagine Benson or Culdrose with a mulitude of fast jets!
Re: Tiger meet 2018- Poland
Benson could do it. The runway is long enough, there's enough ramp space, and it's not like much else goes on there anyway!
No offence to Culdrose, but if it ever did happen, it would be good for it to happen more centrally for the country.

Re: Tiger meet 2018- Poland
Well I might be an old cynic and one day be proved wrong but would the RAF/RN bother with a spotters day, let alone two days? Judging by the prices charged for far inferior events in the UK, a NTM could be £100 plus.
Look at the amount of staff required at Landivisiau, I'm not sure we could manage that. Laying on coaches for the off base parking, toilets, goody bags, T-shirts and lunch bags? We can't even get some yellow paint for our aircraft. It's probably irrelevant anyway, while fighters could land and take off with the runway distance available, I'm not sure Benson's runway is long enough for multiple safe fast jet ops.
My second time at Landivisiau and I felt like the French treated us like guests and they were keen to be good hosts. I understand the second day, when I went, was smoother than the first.
My only gripe was the length of the grass between the spotter's area and the taxiway. Yes I understand why it is so and maybe there were enough areas where it did not hinder photography too much. By the time I walked from one end to the other, the crowd had thinned out, so it was hard to judge.

No issues with grass where I was stood...

Nice choice, by a taxiway intersection and an area where the grass is short, so as not to hide the edge marker lights. To be fair, the grass was ok where I was, (which I would say was about 20 yards to your right) or at least ok as the aircraft taxied towards me, which were the shots I wanted. It's just that I walked from the west end of the area to the east end, once the sun went down the taxiway for the afternoon launch recoveries, to get a better angle for the sun and it appeared that a large amount of the crowd line would have resulted in losing the wheels of taxiing aircraft, with those photographers still there grouped together in clusters where the grass/terrain afforded a clear shot.

There were two Mini meets early 1990s at Wattisham 16-9-92 and Upper Heyford 14-9-90RubyRoo wrote:When was the last time a Tiger meet was held in the UK?

Survival of the Fittest.
Re: Tiger meet 2018- Poland
you could always start another topic 'grass length / where i was stood at NTM17' or 'NTM through the years' instead of filling the thread about 'Tiger meet 2018- Poland' with everything except the subject, just a thought and might be of help for those looking in this thread for something interesting.
Re: Tiger meet 2018- Poland
Yes ok fella, point taken. Thread drift happens.
Here's something interesting for you as requested and on topic. If anyone might be tempted to go next year, Poznan is not too far from Berlin or Warsaw, so two flying options, with direct road links from each. The airfield itself is very close to the main road from both aforementioned cities. Poznan is a sizeable place, so accommodation should be ok.

Re: Tiger meet 2018- Poland
There's an airport in Poznan and a well known Irish airline as well as it's Polish counterpart fly there from the uk
Wroclaw is also an option, closer than Warsaw.

Re: Tiger meet 2018- Poland
I Really fancy this one - Been a few times to Poznan and its a great City, my last Tiger Meet was Cambrai in 2011 which was great. Poznan has some great things to offer, there is a Military Aviation Museum and Poznan has the only scheduled Steam Train Service in Europe. Fights from the North really are at unsocial hours but you get what you pay. Warsaw. Lodz or Wroclaw are options with Train to Poznan or Even Berlin to Poznan, that said Poland's Intercity Trains are not High Speed Trains, Service is great but not efficiency. I really do hope they arrange a Spotters Day for this. Cheers Alan
Re: Tiger meet 2018- Poland
I have to disagree with the only scheduled steam service bit, The Harzer Schmalspurbahnen in germany runs daily steam services throughout the Harz mountain area.
Good to know there is steam service somewhere else I can put on my bucket list.

Presumably the "Polish counterpart" is that well known Hungarian airline Wizz Air who operate to Poznan from UK.tim_raper wrote:There's an airport in Poznan and a well known Irish airline as well as it's Polish counterpart fly there from the uk
