MIDDLE WALLOP BASE TOUR 21/6/16

Post by grahamdevizes » Wed Jun 22, 2016 2:09 pm

An eagerly anticipated organised tour around all the facilities at Middle Wallop. Access was given for all hangars including the Apache hangar and photography was positively encouraged as long as no base personnel or technicians could be identified in the shots. The tour began with a talk by the base CO about the support the base provides and the types of aircraft based there. Following that, we were escorted to all areas by the base RSM, total tour time about two hours. Here's the log

Excellent log Graham!

Who arranged the tour for you, if you don't mind me asking? I've been trying to get a look around Middle Wallop for ages!

Cheers
DC

Hi lads, the tour was arranged by one of our Aviation for All forum members who simply wrote to the base CO enquiring if such tours were available. He liaised with a lovely lady called Pen who organised it all, once permission had been granted by the CO. The only hangar we were not allowed into was hangar 2 but we were allowed to peek inside and those with better eyes than mine were able to read off the reggies of the Lynxes inside.

We were even allowed to sit in an Apache cockpit in their hangar 5 which was a huge bonus. So, other than hangar 2, we had free reign and as said, there were few "off limit" photos, we were told NOT to take shots that could ID staff members or take shots of any open panels on the Apaches. The last stage takes in the historic aircraft hangar where we were entertained by George "Smokey" Bacon, a lovely old chap who has been there, written the book and wears the t-shirt. We thought that a tenner each was a suitable contribution seeing as we had such a great tour and we gave the collection to Smokey to help towards the vintage aircraft he and his team look after.

I was taking photos whilst a mate was logging the frames but he reliably informs me that the Lynxes to the rear of hangar 2 were XZ184, XZ722 & ZD252, one of which has rotors still attached and is due to take her place with the rest of the gate guardians shortly.

Thanks Graham

I just joined the forum. Cosford and Shawbury are also on my 'to-do' list.

Cheers,

You're welcome DC, and thanks for taking the time to sign up with our forum. Aviation for All was formed in January 2015 following the demise of the old Farnborough forum and we have most of the top contributors and photographers from there. We are small by some standards with under 300 members but it is a very friendly forum and we have many "professionals" with the contacts to open doors for the group as far as visits and tours are concerned.

Graham,

Your mate didn't happen to log which of the Apaches were out on the pan did he? We were there the day after and saw 6, of which we ID'd 187 definitely and possibly "213" and "218" . "218" looks more likely to have been "216", but "213" could also have been "231", which is what my mate thought he read it as - I was confident it was 213!

Also, there were a number of Lynxes outside the hangar near the main gate, is that those being referred to above? There were more than 3 on the Wednesday!

cheers

Stuart
