Unwelcome advertisements

Post by nickowen » Fri Jun 13, 2014 12:06 am

Admin
Is there any way you can stop "Aviation News" and "Used Photographic Equipment Specialist Retailer" sitting on top of the main menu bit we need to click to navigate round the forum? They moved up and right to the blank bit in the top right hand corner while we had the D-Day special header, but I see they are now back and in the way again.
I know you need advertisers, but these two are a bit of a nuisance and as things stand I'm not inclined to buy anything from either of them while they are where they are.

I'm pretty sure if you agree to stump up the same cash as they do every year to support this free site that the admins will gladly remove them!

At least they are fairly un-intrusive and relevant to the hobby, other systems will put all sorts of crap based on your browsing history in the advert slots.

What browser are you using, I see them in the same place as EGCC using safari on iPad and imac?

Indeed, could you advise what browser you are using to view the site please? Alternatively a screenshot of the issue you are having please.

We have tested across numerous browsers and devices and never seen an issue with layout so keen to understand.

I'm sorry if this came across as a bit of a rant, and I do appreciate the role played by advertisers in financing this excellent facility, but I thought the problem had gone away when the adverts moved back to their correct position with the D-Day banner.
They have now moved back to their original position and are currently sitting on the line above "User Control Panel" obscuring the text which reads "?....w your posts" The system is Windows XP and browser Mozilla Firefox.

Luckily my Ad Blocker nulls them out. I am on Chrome. My Ad Blocker currently shows "2 ads blocks on this website" so its working, as i don't have the adverts showing. Just the normal FC banner.

Believe you can get Ad Blocker for Firefox and others too. Certainly useful.

Mine looks the same as EGCC's, both on my old XP desktop (which I've just fired-up to check) and my Windows 8 laptop, there shouldn't be any need for ad-blockers surely.

Is this a problem with using Firefox perhaps?

What screen resolution are you running, Nick?

If you shrink the window width to less than about 1200 pixels, so the ad's left edge bumps into the Squadron Prints bit, the Ad banners jump out of the blue "Fighter Control" header, and into the page below.

Happens in Win 7 under IE8, IE9 and IE11.

So anyone with a small screen is going to get a lot of their real estate covered up with stuff they don't want.

IMHO all programmers should be forced to use intel 8088 beasd processors, with a CGA screen and 16Mb of memory. Then we might get some reliable, useable apps. :ninja:

Or people could use a half decent browser that adheres to modern web standards?

Nothing to do with the browser - The advert is 450x80 pixels. The Fighter control banner is 600x99. So the two won't fit on the same line if the client area of the screen (or more accurately window) is less than 1050 pixels wide. A scroll bar appears onve the vertical window size is exceeded, so that's another 20 odd pixels gone, plus the window frame.

See if you can adjust your screen resolution, accessed from within the 'Control Panel' under 'Display' I think (It's been a while since I've been on XP).

Also if you have a favourites tab open along the left hand margin of your browser try closing that as that takes up some of your valuable screen space.

Good luck.

I've shrunk the screen and the ads have popped back into their proper place top right.
Many thanks to all who have offered advice.

I didn't have an issue with the adverts on FC, no issues with them on Chrome, i just don't like adverts sitting there infront of me on every site i go on nowadays, so Ad Blocker blocks every single advert on any website for me, whether they look nice or not.

Yup, each to their own Rich, but I have to say I don't find the FC adverts intrusive at all (not biased!) - it's an empty corner that's being used proactively me thinks.

At least they are related to this hobby and not some random google adverts.

Yep, I've seen adverts for viagra and all sorts on some aviation forums.

We're facing stiff competition...
