Hi guys,

Anyone got any ideas on why Spadeadam is active from 2000-0400 for the next 2-3 days and de-activated through the day ??
Night flying is usual story but not normally till 4 in the morning.

Can't really see anything else NOTAM'd that would tie in with it.

Thanks in advance

Apache night training. They are stopping on the base. They were doing ground to air lock evasion last week and they said there was going to be night works this week. Its the final parts of their training I think. They are off to America soon for live fire exercises. As I type Bedlam2 currently over spade at 900ft.

Looks like the training is continuing into next week. I'm not going to list the notams but looks like mainly night training again. With the possibility of some day works.

Yes there are notams for every night this week through unit Saturday. I think a lot has been cancelled because of the weather. They start at 8pm until around 4am. Problem is they don't always start at 8pm so it's to dark and you can't see anything.

Notam Monday to Thursday from 17:00 until 03:00. 3 x Chinook entered spade and parked on the base for refuelling in between 17:00 And 19:00 19/6/17. This appears to be a night exercise. I waited until 21:30 last night then gave up due to light fading.

Red flag up this morning. Hawkt1 XX230 working the range for approximately one hour this morning. Multiple passes using small practice bombs against the Iraq village. Finished just after 10am. As Usual the wind was high and the light was poor for my photos. The rest of the day was NOTAM for gas explsions.

Bizarre. Why would Hawks drop practice bombs when (a) no Hawks are in front line service, (b) their only conceivable related role is FAC training which doesn't require any metal to be actually dropped and (c) practice bombs can only simulate dumb bombs which we surely wouldn't be using against an "Iraqi village"?

I don't have that much knowledge of the training side, I just like to take photos of any action. I suppose its just so you can learn how to bomb, so when you step up to Typooon and then F35 you already have some bombing knowledge. The aircraft was single crewed as well. I just assume its all part of the training towards moving to the next aircraft you have to fly. The army on the ground were relaying information before each pass on where the enemy were, giving description of the target and its position to other objects in the village. I suppose this would be part of the training so you have to be able to be able to accept relayed information from the ground whilst flying and then carry out the given tasks, which would be the same in all aircraft.

Maybe it was just simulated?

Not sure what you mean by 'just simulated'

XX230 is a T.1 so assume this was a JFACTSU sortie?

Sorry, I have corrected my mistake it was a t1 hawk. Not sure what it was in connection with to be honest. All I know is I turned up the red flags got put up. The hawk carried out about half a dozen passes after instruction from the ground crew of the position of targets in the Iraq village. The aircraft pilot did not know what the targets were until he was instructed from the ground by a visual sighting from the ground troops at Wiley Sike. After each pass he was relayed fresh information of the next target, so it could have been JFACTSU training . Then that was it for the day.

The pilot must have been to Spade a lot, as when being described the position of a car in the compound, he did state 'that he must have seen that village a hundred times and never noticed that car'

It came straight from Leeming, not sure if it went straight back or not. It's the only fast jet action I've managed to capture this year whilst I've been off work, so for me even just the time it was there was appreciated. Although the light was absolutely terrible.

I'm not clued up on the details of RAF jets and missions, I just enjoy photographing them. Let's hope we see more action there, as the ratio of aircraft to gas blasts seems to be in favour of gas blasts every time I seem to go.

Notam up for next Tuesday for night flying. Starting at 19:00 for the week until the early hours of each following morning. Be interesting to see what's in for it but with the darker nights back were unlikely to see much.
