Re: Movements/Notams/Info RAF Spadeadam 2017
There was a single typhoon and two Apaches working the range after dark last night. Possibly a single Chinook as well but I never saw it myself.
Re: Movements/Notams/Info RAF Spadeadam 2017
Ultimate 1 and 2 (chinook) and hunter 1 and 2 (apache) worked the range for approximately 1 and a half hours from 18:00. Ultimate one and two left the range towards Hexham. Ultimate 2 had a bird strike 14 miles out and had to land in a field to check for damage before continuing. Hunter 1 and 2 left the range and from broken comms seemed to be returning to Leeming.
Re: Movements/Notams/Info RAF Spadeadam 2017
Jedi0051 and jedi0052 (typhoon) working the range at 22:35 after air to air refuel off tartan42 just west of Isle of Mull. Jedi0051 knocked the transponder off just after arrival to Spade but jedi0052 was visible on ADSB for ten minutes until it disappeared as well. There were reports of an apache and chinook heading to the range earlier from Otterburn, but no visual just third party info from scanner chatter.

That might be to do with the Wildcats at Otterburn, as they're doing nights next week.

Hi what is the usual FAC Freqs?
Re: Notams/Info RAF Spadeadam 2017/2018
Just for the log really.
Exercise lightning force has been taking place between march 12th and April 6th. This is an apache pilot training exercise. During the exercise there is a good use of flares against ground to air attacking systems based at Wiley. This is a red flag event as live flares are used and was a good show to see. They usually go onto night works after the flares and looking at the NOTAMs for the week ahead it appears the case again.
Running as well last week we had exercise rising panther. The dates for the NOTAM last week were 20th and 22nd March 11:00 until 13:00. I don't think there was any use of Spade on 20th as apparently Otterburn was used instead on that day. On 22nd however there were a pair on chinooks in for the exercise. They entered from what appeared by the noise to be south or east and moved along behind the tree line behind the river. They finally appeared over the trees to head towards the very far west side of the range. Here they worked against threat from Spade but little was observed due to them being very low behind the tree lines. This exercise is also NOTAM for next week as well from 10:00 until 12:00 on 27th and 29th March. If anything will be seen at Spade is another thing. I'm back at work so wont be able to attend.
Later in the afternoon a single chinook contacted Spade heading up from the south over Alston. It entered the range from the south quite high and dropped in again to the west of the tree line, where it worked against threat from Spade. Unfortunately again at to low a level so not much to watch. On departure he thanked the tower for there help over the past two weeks, so this wasn't the first visit by it by the sound of it.
The apaches were up on the 22nd but headed straight over to the east coast to work to the north of Newcastle Airport and possible even into the airport its self.
I left around 16:00 slightly disappointed although it was nice to see some movements at least. I had a good chat with a retired police officer who said he tries to head to the range at least once a month to try and catch some aircraft. He was telling me about the good days when passes were a plenty and shows of force by passing aircraft were regular and very low! I always like listening to the older regulars telling me how it was years ago. Unfortunately even getting aircraft now at low level is getting a rarity so hearing stories from twenty and thirty years ago is always interesting.

Re: Notams/Info RAF Spadeadam 2017/2018
I sat at the range last night and there was nothing until I left at 20:00. After I left and darkness fell a single c130 used the range. There hasn't been any Apaches this week I don't think. A single Merlin used the range on Wednesday night. Don't be surprised if Friday and Saturday nights notams dissapear as they often over run them into the weekend but rarely do they get used.
