Saudi Rock Carvings

Post by WorldInFocus » Fri May 11, 2018 10:02 am

Hi All,

Had a wander to somewhere different today. Close to Taif Airport is a long stone ridge which is the home to a large collection of stone carvings. Not sure when they were done or by who. Most of them depict animals and birds with a few showing people.

Here are some pictures from today's wandering 11th May 2018.

Hope you find these pictures interesting.......just seen that Arabian Ostrich which are now extinct lived in this area and one of my pictures show a carving which resembles an ostrich type animal. Future visits to see these rocks again I think.

Thanks for posting these, fascinating . The images are reminiscent of ancient Aussie ones, remember the TVs series Bush tucker man? The dark deposit seems similar to manganese.
I'm surprised that you are allowed to wander near the airport with a camera. Take care
Remember; learn by rote. ;-)

Apart from the obvious heat factor and sunlight, what are the local climatic conditions?
If there are any significant rain or winds, I'm surprised they haven't been subjected to erosion through weathering, being exposed like that.
Still, great to see these.
UK ONS CPI Rate checker for Sept every year...

The climate is normally hot and dry ranging from 25c to 36c, not to humid. Little rain other than a couple of weeks in April/May and Oct/Nov, which is the rainy season.

Winds don't seem to be much trouble haven't seen many very windy days or specifically sand storm type weather.

Interesting shots Ian. There doesn't seem to be much of interest to photograph over here in the east of the kingdom!
