According to local papers, the closure and rebuild was going to start in Sept 17 and last 9 months!. However the possible state visit of Donald Trump later in the year, seems to have put the start date back. The runway is apparently going to be deepened/strengthened and levelled out. Not sure where 32sqn will deploy to,but the one "unknown" is where the Islander ops will go,as this often operates into the early hours,so this rules out most of the smaller airfields in and around London. One interesting snippet in the local press report,is that It seems the MOD/RAF want to utilise the airfield side more, post runway rebuild.......using military aircraft, not civil!.

I remember reading a short while ago that it was closing and houses being built on the area. http://www.getwestlondon.co.uk/news/wes ... d-12506465

As your quoted article says quite clearly, that was nothing more than a proposal, and, once again contained within that article, it also states that the proposal was rejected by one of the local councils in the area.

I note that Forces Network News recently reported that 32(The Royal) Sq will relocate its fixed wing aircraft (ie the BAe146) to Benson during the closure, but will keep the helicopter(s) at Northolt.

http://www.forces.net/news/raf/raf-nort ... resurfaced

The news item doesn't mention where the other military movements will relocate to, nor where the 10,000pa bizjets movements will relocate to.

The closure is scheduled to start in the spring of 2018 and to last 8 months.

What is perplexing some of the local residents is the cost of the work to be done!...local papers are reporting a cost of some £42m for the upgrade......given that Waddington's runway improvements came to approx £32m,(for a runway twice the length of Northolt's),then other work, currently not publicly known yet, must be on the cards?. With regard to the bases 146s going to Benson whilst the work is being done, apparently there is going to be a "heli-shuttle" between the bases, for crews/ground staff etc.

Everything in London costs more.... it helps to make our country uncompetetive! You get more bang for your buck in the regions, which begs the question why does our rotten Govt continue to plough many times more per head into our prosperous capital and ignore the neglected regions of England and Wales.

Sadly, it’s becsuse their return on investment is higher, so if they invest more they get even more returns. I wouldn’t say London gets investment just because it’s London but because it’s a big services centre and 80% of our GDP comes from service related industries now. Other service centres such as Cardiff, Birmingham, Bristol and Manchester also get government investment, some of which is more visible than London’s such as HS2.
