Re: Warning!? Waddington and other airfields
I’ve looked at Gatwick and both runways have displaced thresholds. Eastern end the closest you can get is 800m and at the Western end it’s 615m so a fair bit away. Compared to Coningsby 230m, Waddington 220m and Lossie 185m. [/quote] The footpath at the railway and A23 road is slightly raised but li...

Re: What would H & S say
In the late 60s I used to go and see my Dad at work at the local BR station in the holidays and at weekends. Inevitably I got to know the porters and sometimes used to blow the whistle and wave the flag to see the trains out. As it was a commuter line with the trains shuttling up to London and back ...

Re: Warning!? Waddington and other airfields
You can get pretty close at Gatwick. There's a footpath from the railway station that runs next to the main road at the eastern end, you can get close at the Western end as well. Both good views for landing, not so good for take offs.

I was at ATC camp there a few years later when XV and 16 Sqns had Buccaneers, 2 Sqn Jaguars. One evening we went for a walk to look at the decoy Canberras, that didn't go down well.

The Magister is a lovely looking jet. This brings back memories of the Belgian and French teams at Biggin Hill airshows when I was a lad.

Re: CAR INSURANCE
Maybe my experience can explain this a bit. In January 2015 I was hit from behind at a roundabout, my £1.5k Fiesta was written off, I ended up only getting £1k for it after a lot of arguing up the initial £600 offer, all time that cost the insurer, it would have been cheaper for them to give me the ...

Strange turn of events. When Guy Ritchie was married to Madonna I believe she tried to get the airfield closed because the noise spoilt her enjoyment of their nearby mansion.

Re: Red Arrows 60th Diamond Season
My tuppence worth, I think the display for the last few years has been pretty dull with long pauses between aircraft in front of the crowd. No doubt very skilful but as the target audience is not other pilots and enthusiasts but the general public then in my view they've lost the plot a bit. In the ...

That's an interesting press release. I thought their first public display was at the 1965 Biggin Hill Air fair.

Re: RAF BINBROOK hangar & flightline tour 5th August 1987
Biggin Hill was my local airfield and I attended a lot of shows there. I can confirm that the Target Facilities Flight provided the Lightning for displays and it was an F.1 or F.1A., operating from the base. Similarly on the rare occasion that F-104s participated at the At Home displays, the Sliver...

Re: RAF BINBROOK hangar & flightline tour 5th August 1987
Good to see XS925/BD - this was the first Lightning to ever land at RNAS Culdrose for the air day in July 1986 - might sound as it's nothing special, but Culdrose only has a 6000ft main runway with no RHAG or barriers and a busy public road not far from the end of the active runway that day! I clea...

Love the two tone grey Lightning scheme. Interesting the Harriers have AAR probes on, I thought they were strictly for ferry flights only, not rated for combat manouvering.

Re: Fly in a Spitfire UK?
Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar do flights, if you've got the cash a run to the White Cliffs and over the Capel le Ferne memorial, I expect as part of the flight you can have a nose round the other aircraft there. Also flights from other locations around the UK. https://flyaspitfire.com Or Aero Legends,...
