Re: The end of RAF flying in Yorkshire
There is of course the scenario whereby the First Minister of Scotland achieves her aim. In which case, perhaps flocks of Typhoons would be migrating south to a new home in splendid Yorkshire. I assume that the relevant parties in MoD have taken this into account in their "what if" planning.

Re: 81ST TFW F-4D QUESTION
Having started this search for info on 66-7750, I am now in a position to hopefully come up with the conclusion. Official USAF records show that this airframe moved around as follows during 74-78 Nov 74 Re-assigned from 432 TRW (Udorn) to 50 TFW (Hahn). Jan 76 Re-assigned from 50 TFW to 52 TFW (Span...

Re: 81ST TFW F-4D QUESTION
My thanks to all who contributed info.
It all ties in with my own early records that it went 50 TFW - 81 TFW - 52 TFW.
I am aware of the Forgotten Jets site but uncertain of their information source.
Regards
David.

81ST TFW F-4D QUESTION
Re: F-4D-31-MC 66-7750
Seeking confirmation that it served with the 81st TFW.
Believe it may have been at Bentwaters July 76 to April 77 but can anyone assist with hard facts (e.g. USAF Aircraft Record Card) to verify.
Any info greatly appreciated.
Regards,
David

Some of us still hope to keep any GR4 news alive...
Does anyone have any update on fate/current location of ZG771 ?
Cheers

Re: Tornado GR4 Fleet General Info
Thanks for the info.
Appropriate that ZA587 should end up at Honington.
In January 1982 it was one of 3 GR1s delivered to IX(B) Sqd at Honington - the first Tornados to join a RAF front line squadron.
Let's hope they take care of it !

Re: Tornado GR4 Fleet General Info
Can't help I'm afraid. A real shame that info on the few survivors has dried up of late. Maybe those who were "in the know" have moved on. I'm sure there are many of us who still have an interest in the fates of these irreplaceable aircraft. Still hard to come to terms with the fact that the regular...

Re: USAF F-84F Crash off Bradwell Bay June 1956
Very many thanks Graham. I'm pretty confident your analysis is correct. I only had info taken from Forgotten Jets and also the Scramble publication but even so was staggered at the number (and regularity) of F-84F losses suffered by the 20 FBW and 81 FBW. As for Record Cards, I agree they can be tri...

Re: USAF F-84F Crash off Bradwell Bay June 1956
Thanks M, I will go back to my colleague who is producing the Dengie Range article and check his source of info which stated that the aircraft was an F-84F and that Dunham's body was recovered by the crash boat that launched in response. The Dunham memorial is listed as: findagrave.com/memorial/1488...

Yes, I know about that one.
Dunham's aircraft looks like it might remain a mystery.
Thanks anyway.

Re: USAF F-84F Crash off Bradwell Bay June 1956
Thanks for the reply Mike. Yes, believe date is correct - Research into Lt. George Dunham revealed that he died on 29 June 1956 in an aircraft accident in England and that he was assigned to the 78th FBS. This info was published in the findagrave.com website. The 78th operated F-84Fs and local repor...

USAF F-84F Crash off Bradwell Bay June 1956
Am trying to trace serial number of the F-84F involved in the following crash Date: 29 June 1956 Unit: 78th FBS / 81st FBW Pilot: Lt. George O. Dunham (sadly, drowned). Location: Nr Bradwell Bay, Essex. Info needed to assist local historian with article on the USAF Dengie Bombing Range, Essex. Any h...

Re: Tornado GR4 Fleet General Info
Sad news that ZA542/035 is being 'disposed of'
Very first Tornado to be assigned to a true RAF unit when it was delivered to TWCU Honington on 29 June 1981.
Having survived right to the end I would have thought this aircraft was deserving of something more appropriate.

Re: Tornado final weeks info
Following the retirement of the RAF Phantom in the early 90s, Flt Lt. Mark Mainwaring of 74 Sqd produced for sale two excellent videos as a tribute to its passing. Is it a forlorn hope that someone at Marham, with the same access, might have done something similar, covering the last months of the To...

I read somewhere that 14 March would be just a single Tornado. Happy to be corrected though.

Question about todays GR4 movements...
For RWY 19 deps:
Were they using the south taxiway from HAS and backtracking the runway from the 01 end?
or
using north taxiway from HAS ?
Thanks for any info.

Re: Tornado GR4 Fleet General Info
IX Sqd was officially re-formed as the RAF's first operational Tornado squadron on 1 June 1982 at RAF Honington.
As part of the work-up it received its first 3 brand new aircraft in Jan 1982.
Among those 3 was ZA587 (then coded B) which I believe is still alive at Marham (coded 055).
