They should find the money to purchase Tim Peake's Soyuz capsule, the Russians are willing to sell used ones (once stripped of technology) for the right price!

Re: Aviation Enthusiast....Military or Civil???
For me, military aviation is far more exciting, as I find it to be far more "capability oriented", as opposed to commercial aviation, which generally focuses on cost, efficiency, etc. For example, "exciting" news in the commercial sector is a new engine that improves fuel consumption by X %, or a ne...

Re: UK MFTS RW - Airbus H135/H145 selected
With contracts for Bell 212 replacements in Brunei and Kenya now requested with a start date of 1 Dec 2016, and Cyprus SAR also possibly up for a new contract, an opportunity exists to replace the entire Bell 212/Griffin HAR2/AW139 fleets with a single fleet. Perhaps the AW189, in order to "piggybac...

Re: RAF to field retained Tranche 1 Typhoons as stand-alone
The issue with using Tranche 1's for QRA is that the Tranche 1's will not be integrated with the new Meteor missile, and will instead have to make do with AMRAAM that Meteor was intended to replace. It seems silly that that RAF's air defenders will be unable to use the RAF's most capable air-to-air ...

Re: 100 Sqn to relocate to CGY and re-equip with Typhoons!?
Former AFM Editor Alan Warnes recently posted on Twitter that 100 Sqn's Hawk T1s are not scheduled to go out of service until 2027.
Also, I was under the impression that all the twin-stick Typhoons were going to be retired.

Re: UK to extend Typhoon OSD to 2040 and form additional two
Seriously????? Uh, yeah. In the hypothetical scenario where "things get real", one well placed cruise missile right in the middle of Lossie's runway could end our ability to launch maritime patrol (giving subs free reign) and Northern QRA Typhoons, and effectively eliminate the RAF's operational pr...

Re: UK to extend Typhoon OSD to 2040 and form additional two
100 Sqn's Hawk T1s are going to remain in service until 2027 apparently!
So now all Mr Putin has to do is knock a hole in Lossie's runway, and that's our maritime surveillance and Northern QRA taken out.

Re: Commander Scott Kelly return from ISS
N992NA usually crosses the Atlantic via Bangor, Maine > Prestwick. By my estimation, this new more Northerly route shaves about ~190nm off of the entire trip. These flights have only occurred since May 2010, and are known as "direct returns". Prior to that, non-Russian astronauts had to wait for aro...

Does Lossie have room for two extra Typh Sqns, as well as the P-8s? It's all just to appease the SNP, in my opinion.

Re: Any news on REDS replacement aircraft
According to Alan Warnes (former AFM editor) on Twitter, 100 Sqn's Hawk T1s are not scheduled to go out-of-service until 2027! So if the supporting infrastructure for the T1s is going to be kept around that long, then the Reds could possibly "piggy back" off of that. Replacing the Reds with the reti...

Re: Boeing Ready to Sign V-22 Aerial Refuelling Deal
This is good news for the UK, as our new carriers really need the VSTOL AAR capability of the V-22. Apparently the RN are interested in the Osprey, hopefully they'll get some in the 2020 SDSR.

Re: UK to consider AAR capability for helos
On the subject of retrofitting our C-130Js for tanking capability - I wonder whether consideration will be given to bringing them up to the USMC's KC-130J Harvest HAWK standard, which would allow our Hercs to launch Hellfire (or possibly even Brimstone)? That could be a very useful capability for SF...

Re: RAF Future Flight Training contract signed
"Prefect" and Phenom 100s will be at Cranwell, and Texans will be at Valley. Although apparently Valley are concerned about having turboprops and jets in the same circuit, and would prefer the Texans to be at a separate base (Wittering has apparently been suggested). I fail to see how just 5 Phenoms...

Re: RAF to establish Typhoon "Red Air" Squadron
I think a good use of the Tranche 1 Typhoons would be as follows: 1x Aggressor Squadron 1x QRA/Home Air Defence Squadron Both of these squadrons could also have a training role, i.e. practice interceptions, weapons & tactics, etc. Plus, replace the Red Arrows' Hawk T1s with twin-stick Typhoons. An i...
